A CT scan is an x-ray procedure that is enhanced by a computer and gives out a three-dimensional view (referred to as a “slice”) of a particular part of the body. While dense tissue can block some areas during standard x-ray image procedures, CT scans create a three-dimensional view by using a computer to combine different slices, showing all bone and tissue. Contrast media is given to highlight various body parts and passes through the body within a day or two. It is usually given by mouth or injection.

MRI is a procedure in which physicians examine the inside of the body to acquire diagnostic information. Using state-of-the-art technology, MRI creates anatomical images without the use of radiation. MRIs are effective for imaging the whole body and are especially useful for evaluating the following conditions: MRIs use a safe magnetic field in conjunction with radio waves to read signals that are given off of body tissue. Computers process these signals and turn them into an MRI image. Different contrast levels in the image are translated during the procedure from varying tissue characteristics.
